Performing calculations in the background

In the standard and advanced versions of formula calculator you can perform calculations in the background (in computer jargon, this means running the calculation on a different thread). The advantage is that you can continue typing expressions as the calculation is performed, or you can set up calculations in other formula calculator windows. In addition, you can stop a calculation if it is taking too long. To use background calculations: Open the Preferences panel in formula calculator, select Advanced, check the 'Run calculations in the background ' box. All calculations will be performed in the background. The '=' button changes to a red dot while the calculations are being performed. To use foreground calculations: Open the Preferences panel in formula calculator, select Advanced, uncheck the 'Run calculations in the background ' box. To stop a calculation: Either click the '=' button (which shows a red dot when calculating), or press command '=' on the keyboard. A calculation can only be stopped if it is running in background mode.
